Watching a piece of wood slowly drift out of reach shouldn’t be this intense. But Lily and Winston are making it a whole event over at @lily_and_winston_the_newfies. This video of the dogs failing to grab the stick is so funny because you can literally see their confusion.

These two are Newfoundlands and are even Northern Newfoundland Club Welfare Ambassadors. They literally have webbed feet meant for this exact scenario. And yet they are just standing there in the muddy shallows. It is like they are waiting for the water to stop.

Dogs won’t swim and get the floating stick

In the video, one of them first reaches out a paw. But it just nudges the branch further into the lake. The dogs in the video look genuinely confused as to why the stick isn’t coming back to them. Their mom says they have the feet for it, but these furbabies are not in the mood to swim. It’s just too much effort for a random afternoon.

Then the other one walks up from behind the stationary one. He looks like he’s providing moral support. But he isn’t planning to swim either. It is just a very slow-motion fail. One of them even tries to extend their face as far as possible. It is like they forgot they can use their legs to move forward. One viewer mentioned that the intention to rescue it is there, but the effort is lacking.

It’s hilarious because they were literally bred for water rescue. They just keep stretching their necks, like they can reach it if they just lean an extra inch. However, the legs stay planted in the mud. “Should someone tell them they were bred to swim?,” one comment asked. Another person said their own Newfie was the same way — lovely dogs, just not very motivated.

There’s even a comment from someone whose dog, Gus, has avoided the lake for ten years. So maybe it’s a thing. They are just standing in the muck while the prize floats off, and they look so serious about it. It’s like a very difficult problem they can’t solve.
