Watching a concrete crew pour a fresh walkway usually means keeping everyone far away from the wet mess. But a family over in West Virginia completely flipped that rule to create a beautiful memory. Bree Schuler found a genius way to immortalize a truly special bond right outside her front door.

She had her 16-year-old senior dog, Preston, walk right through the wet cement to leave permanent paw prints outside the home. According to PEOPLE, the video of this special moment has been viewed more than 12 million times on TikTok. Once people saw the finished result, the reaction was pretty much immediate.

In the video, Preston walks carefully through wet concrete, while Bree Schuler and one of her children stay beside him. The pace is slow, which isn’t surprising. According to PEOPLE, Preston is now 16 years old and has arthritis in his back legs. Schuler later explained that a brief pause and squat during the walk wasn’t what some viewers assumed. His legs had simply gotten tired.

The Maltipoo has been part of Schuler’s life since she was 20 years old. Over the years, he has been with her through moves, marriage, and having and raising children. So when construction began on the family’s newly built home in West Virginia, she saw an opportunity.

Instead of framing a paw print or making another keepsake, she decided to let Preston leave his mark somewhere the family would see every day. And so that’s exactly what they did.

Once the concrete dried, the walkway became more than just a path leading to the front door. It now carries a record of thousands of walks, years of companionship, and one very loved dog. Speaking with PEOPLE, Schuler said, “I loved how it turned out! I can look at it walking to the door knowing he’s always walking beside me!”

Looking at the finished paw prints, it’s easy to understand why she wanted them there. After nearly 16 years together, Preston isn’t just part of the family. He’s part of the home itself.
