In a hilarious video from Instagram user @golden_jeter, a Golden Retriever named Jeter shows his owner that, as they put it in the caption, “reading is for cat people.” And you will believe it’s true if you watch how Jeter makes it his personal mission to shut down his owner’s attempt to read. The on-screen caption adds context, “pov you try to read but you have a golden retriever,” as the Golden stretches across the bed, with his eyes locked in and tail thumping for his owner’s undivided attention.

Owner reveals what reading time with Golden Retriever looks like

In the video, the Jeter’s owner tries reading a book, but the Golden Retriever responds as if it’s a rival. He stares at it and then, like a classic Golden, he presses his nose into the book and nudges it away with a boop, while also bringing in a squeaky toy later, because if the human insists on reading, Jeter must make noise.

The funniest part is that none of Jeter’s moves look mean or tense. He just keeps wagging the entire time, like he is proud of his work. The wag becomes a social signal that a dog, Goldens in particular, considers you their own and treats you like a mission. If they have learned that staring, nudging, chewing a sweater, and squeaking a toy gets a reaction, they keep doing it over and over again. The book may not be the enemy, but it steals Jeter’s focus, and he is not okay with it.

Pet owners and dog lovers loved every bit of the dog’s interruption, with one viewer calling Jeter an “Attention seeker,” and another reasoning on behalf of the dog, joking, “Like is the book reallly more important than me.” Meanwhile, a third viewer applauded Jeter’s strategy with, “Distracting for the win!”

Well, the Golden Retriever could not care less about his owner reading a book, but he does care about the fact that if you are sitting still, you should be petting him.
