In this throwback video, Tommy takes one look at the new arrival sitting in the car seat and honestly has no idea what to make of her. Over on @tommybluestaff, Tommy spends those first few moments doing little more than staring at his new baby sister. He looks curious, a little unsure, and completely fascinated.
You can actually see the Staffy getting braver with each sniff. The distance between him and the baby gets a little smaller every time. Knowing they’re now attached at the hip gives those first nervous moments a completely different feel.
Dog takes on ‘best big brother’ duties after baby sister comes home
The clip begins as their dad carries the newborn’s car seat inside and places it on the floor. Tommy heads straight over, then seems to think better of it and hangs back for a moment instead. The on-screen text introduces it as “Day #1 of Tommy being the best big brother.”
Eventually, curiosity wins. He stretches his neck toward the baby, but keeps his back feet exactly where they are. He clearly wants a sniff, just not close enough to lose his escape route. Rather than rushing him, their mom simply sits beside him and lets him take everything in.
Once their dad picks the baby up, Tommy seems much more comfortable walking over. As we see in the video, the dog carefully sniffs his baby sister and then happily settles beside his dad on the couch.
While there, he soaks up a few head scratches of his own. A little later, he wanders over to the bassinet and even ducks down to peek through the side. By then, Tommy already seems far more relaxed than he did at the front door.
The family shared in the caption that Tommy was “VERY nervous” at first, but they explained that making Tommy feel included mattered most during those first introductions. Looking at where they are today, it clearly paid off. Since then, Tommy has popped up in plenty of family updates, whether he’s riding in the baby’s stroller, celebrating milestones, or simply keeping his little sister company.
